The Texas Rangers are a Major League Baseball (MLB) team based in Arlington, Texas, part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. They compete in the American League (AL) West division and play their home games at Globe Life Field, which opened in 2020. The team was originally established as the Washington Senators in 1961 before relocating to Texas in 1972 and adopting the Rangers name, in homage to the famous law enforcement agency, the Texas Rangers.
For much of their early history, the Rangers struggled to find consistent success, often finishing at or near the bottom of the standings. However, the team began to turn things around in the late 1990s and 2000s, making several playoff appearances. The Rangers enjoyed their most successful period in the early 2010s, when they reached the World Series in back-to-back seasons, in 2010 and 2011. While they fell short of winning the championship both times, the 2011 season was particularly heartbreaking, as they came within one strike of winning the World Series before losing to the St. Louis Cardinals in seven games.
The Rangers have had numerous star players over the years, including Hall of Fame pitcher Nolan Ryan, who also served as an executive with the team, as well as slugger Juan González, shortstop Alex Rodriguez, and more recently, third baseman Adrián Beltré, who became a fan favorite for his defensive brilliance, power hitting, and playful personality.
The team’s more recent success has been inconsistent, but with the opening of Globe Life Field and a renewed focus on player development and rebuilding, the Rangers have been positioning themselves for future contention. In 2023, the team broke through and captured their first World Series title, defeating the Arizona Diamondbacks in five games.
With passionate fans and a new state-of-the-art ballpark, the Rangers are working to build a sustainable winning culture and cement their place as a contender in Major League Baseball.
