The New York Islanders are a professional ice hockey team based in Elmont, New York. Competing in the Metropolitan Division of the Eastern Conference in the National Hockey League (NHL), the team was established in 1972 and quickly became one of the most successful franchises in NHL history during the late 1970s and early 1980s.
The Islanders are best known for their dynasty years from 1980 to 1983, when they captured four consecutive Stanley Cup championships under the leadership of legendary players such as Mike Bossy, Bryan Trottier, Denis Potvin, and goaltender Billy Smith. During this time, the team set an NHL record with 19 consecutive playoff series victories, a feat still unmatched in professional sports.
The team played most of its history at the Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, New York, before moving to the state-of-the-art UBS Arena at Belmont Park in 2021. Known for their passionate fan base, the Islanders have a strong local following on Long Island, where the team’s culture and community involvement are integral to its identity.
In recent years, under head coach Lane Lambert and key players like Mathew Barzal and Brock Nelson, the Islanders have returned to being competitive in the NHL, consistently making playoff appearances. With a storied past and a promising future, the Islanders remain a cornerstone of New York hockey.
