The Seattle Mariners are a Major League Baseball (MLB) team based in Seattle, Washington. Established in 1977, they play in the American League (AL) West division. The Mariners’ home games are held at T-Mobile Park, a stadium known for its retractable roof and stunning views of downtown Seattle and the Puget Sound.
While the Mariners have often struggled to find consistent success, they have had some memorable seasons and legendary players. One of the franchise’s greatest highlights came in 1995, when they made their first playoff appearance and won a dramatic AL Division Series against the New York Yankees, a moment that helped energize the team’s fan base. This run was led by stars like Ken Griffey Jr., Randy Johnson, and Edgar Martinez, who became iconic figures in Seattle sports history.
Ken Griffey Jr., often referred to as “The Kid,” remains the most famous player in Mariners history. A Hall of Famer and one of the most electrifying talents in baseball, Griffey’s defensive prowess in center field and his powerful swing captivated fans throughout the 1990s. The Mariners also enjoyed success in the early 2000s, including a record-setting 116-win season in 2001, a feat that remains one of the best regular-season performances in MLB history. That team was led by Ichiro Suzuki, a Japanese superstar who won Rookie of the Year and MVP in the same season.
Despite these high points, the Mariners have endured the longest playoff drought in North American professional sports, going from 2001 to 2022 without a postseason appearance. In 2022, however, they broke the drought, energizing their fan base once again and showcasing promising young talent, including outfielder Julio Rodríguez.
Though they have never won a World Series, the Mariners are an integral part of Seattle’s sports culture, known for their passionate fans and the unique charm of playing in one of baseball’s most scenic ballparks.
