Sport Lisboa e Benfica, commonly referred to as S.L. Benfica or simply Benfica, is one of Portugal’s most historic and successful football clubs. Founded in 1904 and based in Lisbon, Benfica is part of the “Big Three” in Portuguese football, along with Sporting CP and FC Porto. Known for its strong fan base, often referred to as “Benfiquistas,” the club has an impressive domestic and international following, holding one of the largest memberships of any sports club worldwide.
Benfica plays its home games at the Estádio da Luz, a 65,000-seat stadium that has seen many iconic moments in European football. The club boasts a remarkable record in Portuguese football, having won a record 38 Primeira Liga titles, 26 Taça de Portugal (Portuguese Cups), and 7 Taça da Liga (League Cups). Internationally, Benfica’s golden era came in the 1960s when they won the European Cup twice, in 1961 and 1962, under the legendary coach Béla Guttmann. This period established Benfica as a force in European football and saw players like Eusébio, widely regarded as one of the greatest Portuguese players in history, rise to prominence.
Known for a fast-paced and attacking style, Benfica has a reputation for developing young talent, both from Portugal and abroad. Many players from Benfica’s youth system, known as the Caixa Futebol Campus, have gone on to successful careers in top European leagues. In recent years, players like João Félix and Rúben Dias have gained international recognition and contributed to the club’s financial stability through high-profile transfers.
With its proud history, Benfica continues to be a dominant force in Portuguese football, consistently competing for domestic titles and aspiring to regain its position as a strong contender in European competitions. The club’s motto, “E Pluribus Unum” (“Out of Many, One”), reflects its inclusive identity and commitment to unity among its fans, who passionately support the club through triumphs and challenges alike.
