The Los Angeles Angels are a professional baseball team based in Anaheim, California, and compete in the American League West division of Major League Baseball (MLB). Established in 1961, the franchise has undergone several name changes, starting as the Los Angeles Angels, becoming the California Angels (1965–1996), and later the Anaheim Angels (1997–2004) before reverting to the Los Angeles name.
The team’s most notable achievement came in 2002, when they won their first and only World Series championship, defeating the San Francisco Giants in a seven-game series. Managed by Mike Scioscia and featuring stars like Troy Glaus and Garret Anderson, this championship remains the high point in the franchise’s history.
In recent years, the Angels have been home to some of MLB’s biggest stars. Mike Trout, a three-time American League MVP, is considered one of the greatest players of his generation, excelling both offensively and defensively. The team also signed Japanese phenom Shohei Ohtani in 2018, a two-way player who has made history by excelling as both a pitcher and a hitter, earning AL MVP honors in 2021.
Despite their star power, the Angels have struggled to reach the postseason in recent years due to inconsistent pitching and injuries. They play their home games at Angel Stadium of Anaheim, often referred to as “The Big A,” which is one of the oldest ballparks in MLB.
While the Angels have been unable to recapture the success of 2002, the presence of Trout and Ohtani gives them hope for future contention, making them one of the more exciting teams to watch in baseball.
